Obstetric Bleeding Study UK

Observational and Interview Work

As part of the OBS UK study, we would like to understand how heavy bleeding is dealt with:

  • before the OBS care bundle is introduced to the hospital (usual care period),

  • when the OBS care bundle is introduced in the hospital and supported by staff training (implementation period) and

  • afterwards, when the study teams have left (intervention period).

Although the main study involves 36 sites, a smaller number of these sites (6 in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland and 4 in Wales) will be chosen  for observations and one-to-one interviews. These sites will be carefully chosen to reflect the social and demographic diversity of the UK. At these sites, a female researcher will observe births over a period of time, and also conduct one-to-one interviews with maternity staff and with women, birthing people and their birth partners (if appropriate), about their recent experiences.

If your hospital is chosen as a site for this work then you will be told about this through posters displayed on the unit and by the staff caring for you. If you have experienced heavy bleeding during or after giving birth and want to take part in an interview please let your maternity staff know. You can also let them know if you do not wish to be observed or interviewed, and this will not affect the care you receive.
